Olympic Fever

OK! What can I say? Not trying to self diagnose here but, I officially have Olympic Fever. It started Friday night with the opening ceremonies and the huge amount of pride I felt to be Canadian and the amazing show they put on. Even the glitch when the flame was lit was just so typically Canadian. The whole thing was wonderful. And I especially thought that they handled the unfortunate death of the young Georgian luger with class and dignity. But as a knitter, who couldn’t start her project until the flame was lit, I was frustrated. Finally at shortly after 1:00 a.m., ( which is also the next day ) the flame was lit and I could cast on. And at that late hour, was all I could do before trundling off to bed.

I am even watching moguls and luge. Two sports that I confess I have never had the slightest interest in. The moguls look, and are, so hard on the knees ( me here with my two replacement knees ) and all I can think of is “OMG! You are going to want those knees in the future kids!” Congratulations to Alexandre Bilodeau who made Canadian history by becoming the first athlete to win a gold medal ( in the Men’s Moguls ), on Canadian soil! The pressure is off all the rest of our athletes and perhaps they will be able to perform better without the strain of the entire nation weighing on their shoulders.

Last night was the start of the figures skating with the Pairs short program and what a show they put on. When I say they, I mean the top seeds. There are a lot of teams there that are way out of their league, but the top teams were amazing. Hardly a missed element and if there was one, it was usually the side by side jumps! Really an impressive performance and leaves one waiting for the free skate tonight with great anticipation.

And then tomorrow the curling starts. No everyone’s cup of tea I know, but I love it.

We are going to be on the road for the last four days of the games, so all I can say is thank goodness for my iPhone!! I have downloaded the 2010 Vancouver Olympics app, the CTV Olympics app, and the NBC Olympics app, so between the all I should be able to keep up to date with what is going on. Last night when the skating was on, I bounced back and forth between two channels on TV and kept track of who was up next and other results on one of my apps, so I was seriously on top of everything.

My Olympic sweater is coming along nicely. I have about six inches knit so far. It is being knit in the round so that includes both front and back. Really not worth taking a picture of at this point. I keep thinking it is going to be too big, so I put it on two needles to stretch it our properly, but no, it only measures 20 inches wide, which is what it is supposed to be for the small size. But that is a big time waste when I should be knitting. DH is away for the next two days so I have all the dog walking, etc. to do, which will also cut into knitting time. Remember Donna, this is supposed to be a fun thing. Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to finish it! But then again, I will be spending long hours in the car and will get lots done then.

Sometimes I talk to myself too much!

Go Canada!!!

We're only 3 hours behind and I'm already feeling the effects of a weekend of late nights . But what a weekend !!!! Vancouver did us all proud with the opening ceremonies . The icing on the cake was Alex Bilodeau's gold medal yesterday . Not that Jen Heil's silver and Kristina Groves bronze were too shabby either . Good luck to them all !

I have bad knees and think the same thing watching that skiing! And when they wipe out they REALLY wipe out! I don't know how the athletes can stand it -- I don't know any of them personally, but I get so nervous watching them, especially if the medal events, I can barely watch! My favorites events are speed skating. I'll watch it all, though, even the stuff that doesn't really tickle my fancy.
